MAR Title: An Indigent Patient who underwent Appendectomy

Date of Medical Observation: April 14, 2004

Narration:

A 33 year old male from Laguna came to the ER with a CBC & urinalysis at hand and a piece of paper with a scripture of “Dx: Acute Appendicitis”, according to them they jumped from one hospital to another because they cannot comply with the amount needed for admission and that this was their 4th hospital.

The patient was agonizing in pain and was noted to be hypotensive, febrile and with abdominal guarding. I admitted the patient and immediately booked for an emergency Appendectomy. Since the patient is a non-manilan and only have 1000 pesos at hand, I provided them with the materials for the operation and anesthesia.

A week after, the patient followed up in the OPD bringing a homemade embutido, his mother was so thankful for if not for me her son might have died.

Insights (discovery, stimulus, REINFORCEMENT):

As health care provider we should be compassionate and render service that does not ask anything in return or profit gaining. I am living up to the vision, mission of our department and that is to provide the highest quality service to indigent patients with the lowest possible cost.
