Indexing Title: MJCABAHUG’s Medical Anecdotal Report [04-5]

MAR Title: A patient patient

Date of Medical Observation:  July 2004

Narration:

A 56-year-old patient was referred to me from Family Medicine, who was diagnosed with symptomatic ureterolithiasis, right by ultrasound.  I then instructed the patient to have an additional work up done, KUB IVP.

It was after two weeks the patient came back with no results and said to me that the scheduled work up could not be done without the BUN, Creatinine result, which I forgot to order.

After two weeks, the patient came back with the results, so what I did was took her contact number and to wait for my call.  I was able to refer the patient to the consultant after another two weeks due to unavailability of our consultant.

The patient was operated only after two months when I first saw the patient.  Despite of this, I never heard nor saw anger in the patient that she was operated that long.

Insights (Discovery, Stimulus, REINFORCEMENT):

It is so unfortunate for us the unavailability of our consultants.  Some of our patients wait a long time before their ailments are treated.  I guess we, and the patients have no choice but to be patient enough to wait for them to be treated since we are here in the government hospital setting.  It is for us residents to explain to the patients so they may understand the situation and so as not to react violently of the situation.
