Date of Medical Observation: May, 2004
Narration:
A 59 y.o Barangay Tanod Diabetic, brought at our institution due to wet gangrene of left leg.
Surprisingly patient also
suffered CVD 5 days before the admission but still conversant however he was
quite impossible to clear for operation.
Balancing the situation’s pros and cons at that time was so crucial.
Decision to operate or not that will hold whatever outcomes should be established.
I started my rapport with kind and polite words explained to patient and relatives the possible outcome if not been operated or be operated on, coupled with emphatic frankness and honesty to get the trust and confidence.
I observed no worries on
patient’s face and relative as well.
They decided for operation and consented.
However after meticulous operation and support on medical condition patient expire on the first post op day.
Despite what transpired on my patient, relatives was so thankful and humbly accepted that they fully understand their patient’s condition.
Insights (Discovery, Stimulus, REINFORCEMENT):
A powerful quality of
interaction or rapport once established, means
- Regard for the patient’s well being and health needs
- Acceptance for whatever outcome on the management
- mutual respect
- encouragement on the physician’s part to meet the challenge
- mutual trust
Patient rapport is not only means rapport to the patient but also to the family as well if once build, it will enlist adequate acceptance for whatever outcome.
A good patient rapport and sound clinical judgment is a tested combination that medicine is an art that should be developed and practiced.
