MAR Title: What the doctors don’t know?
Date of Medical Observation: October 31, 2004
Narration:
When able, I always go to my hometown in province and spend the whole time sleeping but I cannot escape from neighborhood patients who will come and visit to avail free medical service. But one patient brought me a remarkable experience. The patient was a middle-aged woman who had rushes all over her body. Medicines for allergies were already taken but nothing went well. The rushes are reddish with flat borders. I prescribed her ointments, thinking that it was just a viral infection.
One week later, I met her in Manila. To my surprise, she looks so clean and neat and the rushes she had before were all gone with no trace at all. In my excitement I asked her how the medication I gave is very effective. She looked at me and hesitantly replied back, “Doc, I’m sorry but I was not able to use the ointment. It’s expensive and I cannot afford to buy one. On the same day after you see me, I went to quack doctor and he said that I was just enchanted by a dwarf. This dwarf got mad at me when I spill out water on his head. The “albularyo” advised me to ask for forgiveness and lend one day of offering. One day I woke up and all the rushes are gone.
While heading home, I’m still thinking how it happened? I was so astonished that I could not even grasp the situation. How can I reconcile that situation to my profession? I do not use to believe in magic and/or paranormal but this really puts me into thinking. It took me awhile to finally realize that maybe, “faith can really cure illness”.
Insights:(physical/psychosocial/ethical/stimulus/reinforcement/discovery)
It is undeniably that there are things beyond reality and forces that are uncontrollable. During the time of Jesus Christ, he heals people not only with his skills but extremely with faith and he successfully done it well. Maybe this is what god wants me to understand that I should combine the practice with faith.
