Date of Medical Observation: FEBRUARY 2006
Narration
Over the years when I feel burned-out, I’ve been asking myself why am I here?
Why should I pursue with my training?
Several times, I am tempted to stop and go home. Be with my family and be with my children in their growing up years.
I tend to forget the reason why I came in this institution and be part of this department.
Two weeks ago, when I was on a vacation at our place, my sister asked me to examine a nineteen-year-old patient with a stab wound.
I went to the emergency room and examined the patient. He sustained a stab wound at the left upper quadrant of the abdomen with omental evisceration. He had a stable vital signs.
I explained the condition of the patient, the need for an emergency operation and money for the treatment.
A brother of the patient reacted why I mentioned about money. I explained further the reality of being treated in a private hospital.
He went out without a word. The patient’s sister said sorry about her brother’s reaction.
When their parents arrived, they eventually transferred the patient to a nearby government hospital.
Insights (Physical, Psychosocial, Ethical) (Discovery, Stimulus, Reinforcements)
1. That patient reminded me of my purpose. I am here to enhance my skills for the betterment of the service I will render to my unfortunate kababayans.
Should I be able to operate on the patient I should have given my service for free and let them settle only the hospital bill.
2. Sharing this to you should encourage the first year residents to set a goal for their residency training. The training is not easy. You need to find a drive for you to persevere.
