Narration:
Another toxic day at the ER, Patients come and go as if the day had no end.
Then there was this 34-yo male brought by relatives with multiple physical injuries from vehicular accident. He was allegedly driving his motorcycle when he was hit by a passing 4 wheeled vehicle. He got abrassion on right foot up to medial aspect of right leg, x-ray revealed complete fracture on distal 3rd tibia right.
Another patient was brought by an ambulance, It was a 46-yo male from Tagatay who was allegedly riding his owner type jeep when a motorcycle passed across his path. He tried to avoid hitting the said motorcycle so he ended up hitting a cemented wall. He sustained a right zygomatic bone fracture. Patient was subsequently referred to Department of ENT for further evaluation and management.
The night came, ER was still busy, everybody was exhausted. I was just about to have my dinner when my intern hurriedly called me. “Sir sir we have patient” he made a sign language running a line with his finger tip across his neck. DOA? I asked. As I approach the patient I saw a fine young man bathe with his own blood. His face was dark red painted with blood as it oozed from multiple wounds over his forehead and a deep laceration on parietal area. “ VA again..” I whispered. The patient was brought by police officer. He allegedly had drinking spree with his friends afterwards rode his motorcycle way home. After unsuccessful resuscitation the patient passed away.
INSIGHTS (Physical, psycho-social, ethical) (Discovery,
stimulus, Reinforcement)
When I was still in bulacan, I used to work as a resident physician in a
tertiary hospital. I used to have a 24 hour duty manning the emergency room. I
had this similar experience of having patient sustaining injuries from vehicular
accident almost every night. One noticeable common denominator with all these
patients was, they rode a motorcycle.
Based on our census. Vehicular accidents related injuries were among the top of the cases we got over the entire month.
Motorcycles are so rampant nowadays. Even teenagers having no licence to drive are free to have one. May we could take part to inform concerned authorities of the current situation.
